Craftswomen
These rugs are handmade in cooperatives by Berber craftswomen using traditional techniques and 100% organic wool. Materials are sourced locally, supporting sustainable land and livestock management in the Middle Atlas.
Rug making is passed from mother to daughter. Skills are developed through observation, repetition and practice.
Beni Ouarain
These rugs originate from Berber tribes in the northeastern Middle Atlas Mountains, an area ideal for raising sheep. The Beni Ouarain tribes are semi-nomadic, moving their flocks seasonally between higher and lower ground. This lifestyle continues today with some modern adaptations.
Traditional Beni Ouarain rugs feature black or brown geometric lines forming diamonds or abstract patterns on cream or white wool backgrounds. Originally, they were made for everyday use—covering cold, stony floors and doubling as bedding or blankets. Simple designs were preferred for practicality and durability.
Handwoven rugs
All Beni Ouarain rugs, vintage and new, are handwoven. As with all handmade pieces, slight imperfections are part of their charm and uniqueness.
Tribal rugs
These rugs are created without a predefined pattern, giving the weaver full artistic freedom. This approach makes each rug a unique work of folk art.
The artisan Beni rugs often follow a minimalistic layout—single or double diamonds in black on a soft white wool background. The traditional Berber knot is used, resulting in a flexible, lightweight rug that’s easy to roll and transport.
What styles pair well with Beni Ouarain rugs?
Modernist designers like Le Corbusier, Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Eameses used Moroccan Berber rugs to soften the clean lines of 20th-century interiors. These rugs also work well in Scandinavian, bohemian, Kinfolk, and more eclectic or ethnic-inspired rooms.
Best rooms for a Beni Ouarain rug
Beni rugs are versatile and suit almost any space. They’re ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, or playrooms. The neutral palette and simple patterns won’t overpower a room but will define zones, add texture and create a cosy atmosphere.
Looking after your rug
Shake the rug outside every few months and vacuum regularly. To revive the pile, vacuum against the grain. Every few cleanings, flip the rug and vacuum the back to remove dust.
Stain treatment
Act fast. Dilute spills with water and blot immediately using a kitchen towel. Start from the edges and move inward. Do not rub. Dry thoroughly using a hairdryer or heater. Avoid bleach or chemical treatments, as they can damage the wool or leave white stains. If in doubt, consult a professional cleaner. We’re happy to advise.
