This Bright Caput Kilim is a Turkish handwoven runner, crafted by women from the gypsy culture in South Central Turkey. The rug features a colourful striped design with bold contrast and no border or motifs, giving it a clean, modern look despite its heritage.

Woven using cotton and goat hair, this rug has a slight coarse feel and a tight flatweave that makes it ideal for areas with more footfall such as kitchens and hallways. Its playful use of colour also makes it a great accent in children’s rooms or bathrooms.

What Is a Caput Kilim?

Caput Kilims are known for their tribal simplicity. While they reflect traditional weaving practices, their lack of borders and motifs sets them apart from other kilims. They were originally made for domestic use, serving as covers, blankets, bedding or even as flooring protection in homes where life was lived close to the ground.

Unlike traditional nomads, the gypsies of Turkey practised a form of commercial nomadism, selling handcrafted items to support their way of life. These kilims reflect both creativity and practicality in their design and purpose.

Materials and Water Resistance

Bright Caput Kilims are mainly woven from cotton, a material well suited to the hot summers and wet winters of the region. Goat hair is often added for its natural water-resistant qualities. When exposed to moisture, goat hair swells and helps block water from passing through—ideal for use as a floor covering or blanket in outdoor settings.

Made on Portable Looms

These kilims are made on narrow, portable looms designed to be rolled up and carried from place to place. Only narrow strips can be woven on these looms. Larger rugs like this one are created by cutting the strips and sewing them together. The result is a long, narrow rug with character and function in equal measure.

Do You Need Underlay?

We recommend underlay if you’re placing the rug on hard flooring such as wood, tiles, or laminate. Underlay prevents slipping, adds comfort underfoot, reduces noise and can extend the life of the rug by reducing friction and movement.

Maintaining and Caring for Your Rug

This Bright Caput Kilim is low maintenance. Vacuum it regularly on a low suction setting. Flip it occasionally to clean the reverse side as well. Giving it a good shake outdoors every few months also helps keep it fresh.

Stain Treatment

• Act fast: blot spills immediately to avoid permanent marks
• Dilute with water, then blot with a clean kitchen towel
• Work from the outside in to contain the stain
• Never rub the fibres or use bleach
• Allow the rug to dry thoroughly to prevent damage
