Description
A Grounding Foundation for Open-Plan Living
Our Thick Braided Jute Rug brings tactile warmth and structural beauty to a room, and at 400 x 450cm it does so at real scale. Handwoven by skilled artisans, this is more than a floor covering: it is a piece of sustainable craftsmanship designed to anchor a large space with natural luxury.
This is a rug for rooms that most sizes cannot hold. It will sit under a twelve-seater dining table with every chair pulled fully clear, unify a large open-plan living and kitchen space, or stretch across a wide garden room or hall. Larger rugs make rooms feel more considered rather than smaller, and this size lets a complete furniture arrangement sit on the rug instead of around it. If you are weighing up proportions, our guide to choosing the right style and size walks through it.
With its soft blonde tones and chunky, artisanal weave, it moves easily between rustic charm and modern minimalism, and works as comfortably in a classic country house as in a pared-back contemporary interior.
Key Features
- Architectural Scale: Sized for open-plan rooms, large dining sets, and spaces where furniture needs to sit fully on the rug. Compare with our other extra large rugs.
- Artisanal Heritage: Handwoven using traditional braiding techniques that celebrate the unique character of natural jute.
- Architectural Border: Four elegant raised borders provide visual definition and a premium finish.
- Weighty and Reversible: The weave is identical on both sides, so the rug can be turned to even out wear. Its natural weight helps it stay in place.
- Luxurious Profile: A 1cm central weave rising to 1.5cm at the borders for a cushioned feel underfoot. Worth checking door clearance before ordering.
- Naturally Insulating: Jute offers gentle insulation and gives a large room mild noise absorption, which matters in open-plan spaces with hard floors.
- Eco-Conscious: Crafted from 100% biodegradable jute, a fast-growing crop grown in monsoon regions with no pesticides.
Need a different footprint? The same braided weave is available made to measure, with a minimum three-month lead time. Get in touch for questions and quotes.
What to Expect from Natural Jute
Jute is a vegetable fibre extracted from the stem of the jute plant, and it behaves like a natural material rather than a synthetic one. We would rather set expectations honestly than have you discover this after delivery.
- Some shedding is normal. We heat-treat the fibres to minimise it, but it cannot be eliminated entirely. Gentle vacuuming on a low setting keeps it under control, and it settles over time.
- Loose strands can appear. With a weave this thick, they can simply be trimmed off or tucked back in. A tighter weave reduces this if it concerns you.
- Jute is less hardwearing than wool. It is not the right choice for very high-traffic areas or damp rooms. If durability is the priority, a wool rug is the more robust option.
- The reversible weave helps. If one side wears, turn the rug over and start again.
Care and Longevity
Rugs made from plant fibres are prone to staining and fading over time and reward a little care.
- Vacuum regularly on a low-suction setting, without a beater bar, to protect the fibres.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry or barely damp cloth. Be gentle.
- Avoid damp or high-humidity environments, which weaken the fibres over time.
- Rotate the rug periodically for even wear.
- On wood or tile, an underlay protects the floor and improves comfort. This rug is heavy and should not shift, but at this span an underlay also helps it lie flat.
Delivery Note for Larger Sizes
This is a heavyweight piece and we recommend two people for handling and positioning. Please check access, doorways, stairs, and lift dimensions before ordering, and see our delivery information for what to expect. Get in touch for guidance on placement, or visit the Battersea shop by appointment to see the weave in person.

At Emily’s House, we believe beauty should never come at a human cost.
