Traditional Kilim Rug Featured by Paint & Paper Library

We’re proud to share that our grey-striped traditional kilim rug was recently featured in a beautifully styled shoot by Paint & Paper Library a brand celebrated for its refined colour palettes and distinctive design approach.

The backdrop for the shoot featured two rich tones from their palette: Malachite, a saturated green, and Peruvian Yellow, a deep, warm ochre. These bold, expressive colours set the tone for the space. Our large-format rug played a key role in balancing the scene grounding it with natural texture and understated character.

A Closer Look at the Rug

The star of the shoot was our grey-striped traditional kilim rug, handwoven in 100% wool and measuring 300x400cm. This is one of our most popular large-scale kilims, a blend of classic craft and minimal design.

Key features:

  • Woven entirely by hand by skilled artisans
  • Crafted from hand-dyed wool, giving a rich, tonal finish
  • Flat-woven construction for a clean, low-profile look
  • Minimal grey stripe pattern that adds texture without noise

Because the wool is dyed by hand, no two rugs are identical. The colour shifts subtly throughout the weave, adding visual depth and giving the rug a layered, lived-in quality. In the shoot, this effect worked beautifully against the intensity of the painted walls.

Pairing Colour and Texture

The Paint & Paper Library shoot showed how a grey-striped traditional Emily’s House kilim rug can hold its own next to bold design elements. Its striped pattern offered just enough rhythm and structure to the room without competing with the saturated green and yellow hues.

Using a traditional flatweave like this in a colour-rich setting creates a kind of visual balance. The paint brings warmth and energy, while the rug keeps the space feeling calm and grounded. It’s a simple contrast, but it works.

This shows that a traditional kilim doesn’t have to be rustic or ornate. When paired with clean lines and confident colour, it can look fresh and modern, without losing its handcrafted charm.

Practical Style That Lasts

Traditional kilim rugs are prized for their durability and ease of use. They are woven without a thick pile, making them hardwearing and highly practical in everyday spaces. The flatweave style of our grey striped traditional kilim rug means it sits close to the floor, which makes it especially useful in areas where chairs need to move or where foot traffic is high.

This particular design is popular for:

  • Dining rooms
  • Open-plan lounges
  • Family living areas
  • Workspaces or studios

At 300x400cm, the rug shown in the shoot easily defined the space. Its minimal stripe added structure to the layout, without overwhelming it. The grey tones created a neutral base that complemented the stronger wall colours while adding depth underfoot.

Bespoke Options for Design Projects

If you love the look of the Emily’s House grey striped traditional kilim rug but need a different size, we also offer a made-to-measure option. Our bespoke kilims are woven to order and take around 3 months from start to finish.

Each custom rug is still handwoven from hand-dyed wool, maintaining the same level of quality and texture as the original. This is ideal for interior designers, architects or anyone with a specific room layout to accommodate.

Whether you’re looking for something long and narrow for a hallway or a wider version for a larger open space, we can help. If you’re unsure what size you need, we also offer guidance on measurements to help you choose the right fit.

Why Choose a Traditional Kilim?

A traditional kilim rug brings heritage, function and simplicity to your interior. These rugs have been used for centuries in homes around the world, known for their strong flatwoven construction and long-lasting fibres.

But they’re not just practical. A well-chosen kilim, especially one as adaptable as our grey striped traditional kilim rug, adds texture and warmth without stealing focus from other elements in the room. Its clean design is timeless, and its craftsmanship means it can be passed down or moved from room to room as your style changes.

It’s also worth noting that our kilims are woven by artisan makers using techniques that respect and continue long-standing weaving traditions. Each rug represents hours of work, careful dyeing, and skilled craftsmanship passed down through generations.

How It Looked in the Shoot

In the Paint & Paper Library shoot, the rug was layered into a space with bold painted walls, statement furniture and rich lighting. Its grey stripes subtly echoed tones from the surrounding decor, while its texture helped to soften the harder surfaces of the room.

The finished result was a space that felt styled but comfortable, elegant yet functional. That’s the sweet spot our rugs are designed for.

What stood out was how this grey-striped traditional kilim rug held its own in such a colour-forward room. It didn’t need to shout. It simply did what great design should do, bring everything together.

Inspired by the Shoot?

This photo shoot captured how colour, texture and craftsmanship can work together to create spaces that are both bold and balanced. If you’re drawn to the richness of Malachite and Peruvian Yellow, but want a base that calms and complements, a rug like this is a smart choice.

Our grey-striped traditional kilim rug lets you explore characterful wall colours while keeping your flooring refined and timeless. It fits naturally in minimalist homes, layered interiors, and even historic buildings where a neutral floor covering adds breathing space.

We loved seeing this piece styled alongside such striking paintwork, and we hope it gives you some ideas for your own space. Why not purchase the traditional kilim rug from the photoshoot.
