2 Purple Striped Matching Turkish Kilim Runners

These are a matching pair of Turkish caput kilim runners, handwoven by the gypsy culture in South Central Turkey.

They have a striped design in of purple, red and teal green.

They are a matching pair and can be used as two separate runners but we can also arrange to have them sewn together to make a larger piece (168x230cm) or make them into one long runner instead of 2.

This matching pair of purple striped runners have a good medium size of 84cm wide with a length of 230cm.

They are handmade with mixed materials of cotton and goat hair and the latter gives it a slight rough feel to it. They sits strong and sturdy on the floor yet underlay might be recommended depending on the flooring underneath.  For high quality underlay, pls click here.

This matching pair of purple striped runners is appealing to a wide variety of projects and interiors, from contemporary homes to Scandinavian, bohemian, Kinfolk and more ethnic interiors.

Maintaining and caring for your carpet

These Turkish kilim runners in purple stripes are flat woven, hardwearing and durable. Their dark purple, red and teal colour palette make them low in maintenance. It is best to vacuum them on a lower setting and make sure you also do the reverse now and then as just as much dust accumulates there, as on the front. Furthermore, it is sensible to give your rug a good shake outside every couple of months.

Caput kilims

Caput kilim rugs have a tribal folkloristic character but in the same time the absence of borders or any kind of motif makes them different: they are generally colourful with a simple striped design and hardwearing texture.

The making of a caput kilim is largely associated with the Turkish gypsy culture. They are made by women for domestic purposes, life was spend on the floor, upon which various coverings where being laid to serve as bedding, blankets, table sofa, or protection against the stony ground.

Gypsies are known for their travelling lifestyle but unlike the traditional nomads they do not have reds and wide lands. Their economy is based on ‘commercial nomadism’ selling their craft products in exchange for the products they need.

The gypsies making these sort of kilims live in South Central Turkey. As this area has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and wet winters, it is  ideal for cotton production. As such, cotton is predominantly used in the making of these kilims. They often add goat hair to the kilims as well, to make them more water resistant. Goat hair has the quality to expand with water and this makes that water cannot get through. This quality of water resistance is important for the gypsies as they often use these kilims as covers or to blankets.
