Our semi-thick jute rugs fits exactly in the middle of our thick and thin braided jute rugs! Here is how:
- It strikes a balance between thickness and texture, being thinner than our thick braided jute rugs while still maintaining a chunky feel.
- Its thickness is approximately 1cm, which is thicker than our thin jute rugs (0.5cm thick) but thinner than the thick braided rugs (2cm thick)
- It boasts the same light blonde color as the thick jute version, while thin jute tends to be slightly darker
- It provides a soft underfoot experience, similar to thick jute, whereas our thin jute rugs feel a bit firmer.
- The tighter weave enhances its durability, making it more resilient than our thick jute rugs, though thin jute rugs are the most hardwearing.
- Like thick jute rugs, the semi-thick jute rugs are reversible, unlike thin jute rugs which are not designed to be flipped.
Made from the fibres of the jute plant, which is primarily grown in India and Bangladesh, these rugs don’t only look beautiful but they are eco-friendly, as jute is a renewable resource that requires little water and no pesticides to grow, so a sustainable choice for environmentally-conscious consumers.
Whether used as a decorative accent or a functional floor covering, jute rugs are a versatile choice and are sure to enhance the look, noise and feel of any space.

Production
The rugs are woven in a workshop in India complying with ILO conventions and recommendations, good working conditions and fair wages in line with The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and key UN conventions.
Jute
Jute is a long soft material that can be spun into coarse strong threads. It is one of the most affordable plant fibres, and second only to cotton in the amount produced and variety of uses.
The jute plant needs standing water to thrive. The suitable climate for growing jute is warm and wet and therefore South India is great for jute production with its monsoon climate, humidity and temperatures from 20-40degrees.
Vegetable fibre
Jute is a vegetable fibre that is extracted from the stem of the jute plant. It is an eco-friendly material that is biodegradable and renewable, so these rugs are a great choice for those who are looking for an environmentally friendly option.
When do I need underlay?
I recommended using underlay if your rug is fairly lightweight, like a kilim or a thin short-pile rug, that is placed on a hard surface like wood, laminate or tiles. In such cases your rug may slide, which can cause a safety hazard. Underlay would prevent this and will keep your rug in place. Underlay also provides extra cushioning which makes the rug more comfortable to walk on.
“Underlay makes SUCH a difference not only in keeping the rug in place but also in making it feel much nicer to walk on.”
What’s more, underlay offers noise-reduction properties and may even increase the longevity of your rug.
Our thick and semi-thick braided jute rugs are heavy and do not necessarily need underlay.
Our thin braided jute rugs have a lighter weight and could benefit from underlay especially on a wood flooring.

Maintaining and caring for your carpet
Unlike wool rugs, jute rugs cannot typically be washed. Instead, it is recommended to quickly blot any stains with a clean towel to absorb as much of the spill as possible. To keep jute rugs looking their best, regularly vacuum them on a low setting and trim any loose strands or tuck them back in. The thick and semi-thick braided jute rug is reversible, allowing for use on both sides. The thin braided jute rug is most durable due to its tight weave, but can only be used with one side facing up due to the soumak weave.
Rugs made from plant fibres are prone to staining and fading over time. They do require some TLC and are not as hardwearing and durable as for example, wool rugs.
There are some things you can do:
- Vacuum on a low suction setting to avoid damaging the fibers.
- Spot clean any spills or stains immediately with a clean, damp cloth. Be gentle with the rug to avoid causing any damage.
- Avoid placing the rug in areas with high humidity, as this can cause the fibers to weaken and break down over time.
- Rotate the rug periodically to ensure even wear and tear.
