Description
Caput Kilim Turkish Handwoven Striped Rug
This is a Turkish caput kilim runner, handwoven by the gypsy culture in South Central Turkey.
It has a colourful striped pattern in multi colours. It is a vintage rug with contemporary look and in very good condition.
It is handmade with mixed materials of cotton and goat hair and the latter gives it a slight rough feel to it.
This striped kilim would work well in areas with more footfall like kitchen and hallways or where an accent of colour is required like a kids room or bathroom .

Caput kilims
Caput kilim rugs have a tribal folkloristic character but in the same time the absence of borders or any kind of motif makes them different: they are generally colourful yet with a simple striped design and hardwearing texture.
The making of a caput kilim is largely associated with the Turkish gypsy culture. They are made by women for domestic purposes, life was spend on the floor, upon which various coverings where being laid to serve as bedding, blankets, table sofa, or protection against the stony ground.
Gypsies are known for their travelling lifestyle but unlike the traditional nomads they do not have herds or land. Their economy is based on ‘commercial nomadism’ selling their craft products in exchange for the products they need.
The gypsies crafting these kilims reside in South Central Turkey, where the Mediterranean climate of hot summers and wet winters is perfect for growing cotton. As a result, cotton is the main material used in these traditional rugs. Additionally, goat hair is frequently incorporated into the kilims to enhance their water resistance. This unique trait of goat hair allows the kilims to expand with water, creating a barrier that prevents water from seeping through. This water-resistant quality is particularly valuable to the gypsies, who regularly use these kilims as covers or blankets.
Portable looms
The making of a caput kilim is done on a portable loom that can be rolled up and packed on to an animal for migration and re-erected when they reach their new destination. This means it only allows you to weave long narrow strips which are then cut into parts and sewn together to make larger pieces to serve as coverings for various domestic purposes.
Size and shape
This caput kilim has a large size of 150cm wide and 290cm long.
If you are in doubt about what size you ideally need, please find here some guidelines to help you make the right decision.
Underlay : When do I need underlay?
I recommended using underlay if your rug is fairly lightweight, like a kilim or a thin short-pile rug, that is placed on a hard surface like wood, laminate or tiles.
In such cases your rug may slide, which can cause a safety hazard. Underlay would prevent this and will keep your rug in place.
Underlay also provides extra cushioning which makes the rug more comfortable to walk on. What’s more, it offers noise-reduction properties and may even increase the longevity of your rug.

Maintaining and caring for your rug
This caput kilim is relatively low maintenance and only requires and occasional vacuum clean.
It is best to vacuum it on a lower setting and make sure you also do the reverse now and then as just as much dust accumulates there, as on the front.
Furthermore, it is sensible to give your rug a good shake outside every couple of months.
Stain treatment
The quicker you deal with spills, the less chance there is of it staining.
The effective way to treat a spill, for example red wine, is to apply water to begin with to dilute the stain, followed by mopping it with a kitchen towel straight away.
Start from the outside of the stain and work inwards to limit the affected area, but do not rub the stain as this can damage the yarn. Once a carpet gets wet, it is important to dry it out thoroughly afterwards, to prevent the wool from rotting.
Don’t use any bleach or chemical treatments as they might take the stain out, but leave a white stain instead.
When in doubt, professional carpet cleaning will always remain the best choice. If you need advice on this, pleased get in touch.
